About Jenny Allworthy

Hello and welcome to The Jane Austen Film Club. My pen name is Jenny Allworthy (a small joke- only one English Lit prof has laughed so far). I am actually a Canadian optometrist whose passion is period drama, film adaptations of 19th century literature in particular .
I have been interested in this topic since seeing Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie come to life on the screen as a child. Literature and film have always been a delight for me, the Regency, Victorian and Edwardian periods in particular.

My obsession continued with travel to the UK and then really took off when I saw the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. Then Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility, Gwyneth Paltrow's Emma and Amanda Root in Persuasion came along and I happily read all of Jane Austen's novels along with her letters, juvenilia and numerous biographies.

I have since read and viewed adaptations of many other authors such as George Elliot, Mrs. Gaskell, Anthony Trollope, Edith Wharton, Thackeray, Hardy...the list is endless. And that is why I am still writing this blog three years later. Apparently, there is still lots of material old and new to discuss in the world of period drama.

So again, welcome and please leave comments. I love to hear from all of you and I respond to as many as I can.

  1. Hi Jenny,

I really like your site and love Downton Abbey.

I’m with a company called Yekra. We are an online film distribution company based in LA and we have a romantic comedy from one of the major film studios, Sony Pictures, all about Jane Austen called Austenland. It’s about a woman obsessed with Mr. Darcy who travels to a Jane Austen theme park to find the perfect man. I think your website would be a perfect place to showcase the film!

Essentially you would sign up free of charge to become a Yekra affiliate and get a unique code to embed the Yekra player in your blog. It would appear exactly like a Youtube player or a simple link, except people watching would have the option to rent the film or purchase any merchandise associated with it (DVD, Blu-Ray etc…) and every time someone rents or buys it off your site, you would get a portion of the proceeds as a bonus (usually between 10-20%). Here is an example of another affiliate: http://ignite.me/ So you would get to share this great film about Jane Austen, distribute it on your site (meaning viewers will actually watch it on your site) and get a meaningful share of the revenue every time one of your many viewers decides to rent or purchase it. All at no cost to you. You would be able to share it the same day as when it comes out on ITunes and everywhere else, but you would get to distribute it to your network and get rewarded for doing so!

Our company stands for sharing films directly with the people who are passionate about them and our exclusive player is the best way to do that. Get back to me and I will give you all the details about how you can start sharing this great film! Feel free to check us out at Yekra.com

    Best,

    1. Thanks Iain. I may take you up on this. Connecting readers/viewers with the films they want to see is what I love to do. And I did review Austenland when it hit the theatres and I thought it was great fun!

  2. Dear Jenny,
I enjoy Jane Austen movies too and own several myself! My friends and I have spent many a night watching them!!
I was hoping to share a project my mom and I worked on together. My mom has a three year degree in Men's tailoring and used that knowledge to design and sew over 18 costumes including a four piece men's suit and four children's outfits. Once that was accomplished, we chose some of our friends to model for us at various times and locations. The project took over a year to complete but when done over 6,000 photos were taken! Because I was drawn to the Jane Austen time period due to its charm, elegance, grace and innocence, I entitled my work, “Return to Innocence”. I turned the images into digital art and have made it available for digital download via my website www.areturntoinnocence.weebly.com Our desire through our work is to bring a touch of elegance to people's lives and a remembrance of beauty and innocence of a time gone by! I would be so pleased to hear from you and to know what your opinion is of the art. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your reply!
    Sincerely,
    Sarah Schurman
